Rochester was Cedar County's first county seat. The log building built there as a courthouse and jail may never have been used for court purposes. [1] It was used, however, for school exhibitions, dances, and maybe as a jail. [2] The county seat was moved to Tipton in 1841, but the frame courthouse building was not completed until 1845.
The North Cedar Community School District serves the community. [11] It was established on July 1, 1995 by the merger of the Clarence-Lowden Community School District and the Lincoln Community School District. The former was formed on July 1, 1973 by the merger of the Clarence and Lowden school districts. [12]
