Richard the Lionheart was a British ITV television series which ran from 1962 to 1963, aimed at younger audiences. [ 1 ] It began with the death of King Henry II , and put forward the traditional view of King Richard the Lionheart as a hero, and his brother Prince John (played by Trader Faulkner ) as the villain.

The series premiered on ITV in January 1958, while filming of all 39 episodes continued through to June 1958. Although the pilot episode was shot in colour, the rest of the series was shot in black and white. Richard Coer de Lyon (‘Richard the Lionheart’) survives in 10 manuscripts, of which the most complete is Cambridge, Gonville and Caius MS 175. [10] The poem was printed in 1509 and 1528, both times by Wynkyn de Worde. An extended abstract of Richard appeared in George Ellis's Specimens of Early English Metrical Romances (1805).
