Melbourne tram route 86 is a tram route on the Melbourne tramway network serving the city of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia.Operated by Yarra Trams, the route is coloured yellow and extends from Bundoora RMIT to Waterfront City over 22.2-kilometre (13.8 mi) of double track via Reservoir, Preston, Thornbury, Northcote, Clifton Hill, Collingwood, Fitzroy, East Melbourne and Bourke Street.
Part of the route opened as a cable tram line operated by the Melbourne Tramway & Omnibus Company on 30 August 1887, operating along Bourke and Nicholson Streets. [1] It operated until 26 October 1940, when the Bourke Street cable lines were abandoned by the Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB) in favour of double decker buses.

The section of track between Queensberry Street (Stop 4) and Commercial Road (Stop 25) is the oldest section of this route, dating back to the Brighton Road cable tram which opened on 11 October 1888 by the Melbourne Tramway & Omnibus Company. This cable tram line was electrified in stages by the Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board.
