iPadOS 18 [1] is the sixth and current major release of Apple's iPadOS operating system for the iPad. It was revealed at the 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). [ 2 ] It is the direct successor to iPadOS 17 and was announced alongside iOS 18 , macOS Sequoia , visionOS 2 , watchOS 11 , and tvOS 18 .
iPadOS 13 is the first major release of iPadOS, an iPad-specific fork of iOS meant to emphasize the multitasking and tablet-centric features of the iPad. It was previewed at Apple's WWDC 2019, and released on September 24, 2019 as 13.1. iPadOS version 13.0 was never publicly released, though beta testing for iPadOS 13 started with 13.0.
The first iPad was introduced on January 10, 2010, and ran iPhone OS 3.2, which added support for the larger device to the operating system, previously only used on the iPhone and its smaller counterpart, the iPod Touch. This shared operating system was rebranded as iOS with the release of iOS 4 [9] in June 2010.
Some of the same features are arriving with new updates on the iPad and Mac. iPad OS 18.1 and MacOS 15.1 are also available to download now and bring Apple Intelligence tools to those platforms.
The Apple Intelligence platform is available in iOS 18.1 and beyond on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models as well as the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models. Apple Intelligence adds artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and large language model integrations to Siri and other operating system functions, such as the Photos app. [3] [8] [9]
But it also announced a change that will come to most existing iPhones, for free: the release of iOS 18. That will be available to download from 16 September, Apple said.
