Tuskegee National Forest is the smallest national forest in the U.S. (and one of only six that is contained entirely within a single county), but supports many outdoor activities. The forest is headquartered in Montgomery , as are all four of Alabama's National Forests.
The forest was established as Alabama National Forest on January 15, 1918, with 66,008 acres (267.12 km 2). [1] On June 19, 1936, it was renamed Black Warrior National Forest, [5] which in turn was renamed William B. Bankhead National Forest on June 6, 1942. [6] [7] In 1959, Executive Order 10850 removed land from the forest's boundaries.

DeSoto State Park is a public recreation area located on Lookout Mountain, eight miles (13 km) northeast of Fort Payne, Alabama. [2] The state park covers 3,502 acres (1,417 ha) of forest, rivers, waterfalls, and mountain terrain. It borders the Little River, which flows into the nearby Little River Canyon National Preserve.
Within the boundaries of the three national reserves are combinations of federal land (Park Service or National Wildlife Refuges), state parks and forests, local public lands, and private properties. Two national reserves are currently managed as official units.
