The Wilderness is managed by the United States Forest Service in Tennessee and is part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. The highest elevation in the Big Frog Wilderness is the 4,224-foot (1,287 m) peak of Big Frog Mountain in Tennessee. Although not a high mountain, Big Frog seems to dominate the Wilderness because it stands alone.
Big Frog Mountain is a mountain located primarily in southeastern Tennessee in the Big Frog Wilderness, within the Cherokee National Forest. It is located within the Blue Ridge Mountains , part of the Appalachian Mountains .
It encompasses two older and smaller parks: the Hardy Park and Redondo Park, later also known as Big Frog and Little Frog respectively. [1] [4] [8] [11] The community group that championed the creation of the larger park initially called themselves Friends of the Rockridge/Temescal Park and also FOG as an acronym for Friends of the Greenbelt.
Parts of these wilderness extend outside Chattahoochee National Forest, as indicated. The wildernesses are: Big Frog Wilderness (Cherokee NF in Tennessee and Chattahoochee NF in Georgia) Blood Mountain Wilderness; Brasstown Wilderness; Cohutta Wilderness (Chattahoochee NF in Georgia and Cherokee NF in Tennessee)

Managed within its boundaries is a designated wilderness area of about 22,000 acres (8,900 ha). This is officially known as the Henry W. Coe State Wilderness, but locally as the Orestimba Wilderness. The 89,164-acre (36,083 ha) park was established in 1959. [2]

The Cherokee National Forest contains such notable sites as the Ocoee River (site of the 1996 Olympic whitewater events); 150 miles (240 km) of the Appalachian Trail; Citico Creek Wilderness; Big Frog Mountain within Big Frog Wilderness, and surrounds both the Tennessee Valley Authority Watauga Reservoir and Wilbur Reservoir.
