Researchers at the University of Washington School of Medicine have developed a software program that enlists artificial intelligence to decipher the ultrasonic vocalizations made by mice and rats.
The ultrasonic vocalizations emitted by rats and mice have been categorized. There are three classifications: 22-kHz vocalizations, 40-kHz vocalizations, and 50-kHz vocalizations. [ 1 ] The 40-kHz calls are short in duration, lasting anywhere from 80-150 milliseconds, while the 50-kHz calls tend to be even shorter, lasting anywhere from 20-100 ...
Behaviors measured in these models include approach to olfactory pheromones emitted by other mice, approach to familiar and new conspecifics, reciprocal social interactions, ultrasonic vocalizations, communal nesting, sexual and parenting behaviors, territorial scent marking, and aggressive behaviors, as well as motor behaviors such as gait.
Vocal learning is the ability to modify acoustic and syntactic sounds, acquire new sounds via imitation, and produce vocalizations. Ultrasonic hearing is a recognised auditory effect which allows humans to perceive sounds of a much higher frequency than would ordinarily be audible using the inner ear, usually by stimulation of the base of the cochlea through bone conduction. Normal human hearing is recognised as having an upper bound of 15–28 kHz, [1] depending on the person.
