House of Prayer founder Edward Wayne Runyan (1864–1945) followed the example of the "Holy Jumpers" of the Metropolitan Church Association, a Holiness Methodist denomination that taught that Christians should live communally in accordance with the teachings in Acts 2:44–47, [1][2] the teaching referred to as "All Things Common". It was built in 1827, and is a two-story, four bay by two bay, brick dwelling. It has a one-story, four bay rear wing and features an unusual arch-linked double chimney. The interior has a modified Quaker plan.
The first parish was founded in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607, under the charter of the Virginia Company of London. The tower of Jamestown Church (c. 1639–1643) is one of the oldest surviving Anglican church structures in the United States. The Jamestown church building itself is a modern reconstruction. [40]
