The scene when they Alonso, his teammates and Jake went to Rogers house is the best scene for me. His plan to protect himself and frame Jake was pretty evil and brilliant. Having seen Sicario a few years ago, and having watched Nolan's 'Insomnia' earlier this year, Training Day is quite similar to those two in many ways.

Fun Fact: The license plate on Alonzo's dope-ass Monte Carlo "ORP 967" is actually a nod to Officer Rafael Perez, the disgraced L.A.P.D. officer who was born in 1967, and on whom the character was based. And Malcolm X also a criminal but he did win best supporting actor for Glory in which he plays a slave.

Training Day tells you a story from the outside. Usually, you'd get the story from the inside. The actual story of Training Day goes something like this: (Spoilers Ahead) Corrupt narcotics cop Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington) takes a trip to Vegas. There, he gets in a fight and ends up killing a Russian mobster.

Training Day focuses on Alonzo constantly delaying and rebuffing Hoyt. Alonzo butters him up -- offers him money, praise, career opportunities. But Alonzo doesn't care. Alonzo knew from the very beginning of the movie that Hoyt wasn't going to make it through his training day. Hoyt was disposable.

Alonzo talks to some judges (the three wise men) and bribes them to get an arrest warrant. Proving that even the highest levels of the system are corrupt. Alonzo didn't actually need a warrant, he could have easily just killed the guy and taken the money, but he wanted Jake to see how the world really is.

I think one of the most underrated and overlooked themes of Training Day, is the contrasting relationship between Narcs and uniformed officers. Uniformed officers can obviously abuse their power, but Alonzo and his team operate on another stratosphere of criminality and corruption. They possess power and influence that the average cop doesn't have.

Narc (2002) starring Jason Patrick and Ray Liotta, one of the most underrated police/crime films of all time IMO. Also Pride and Glory (2008) starring Edward Norton and Colin Farrel is a fantastic film and has a similar tone to Training Day. End of watch. But it's a bit over the top at times.

This is one of those movies that ages like wine. It is much more than just another Denzel Washington showcase. Ethan Hawke is superb as Jake and actually has more screen time than Washington. Scott Glenn and especially Cliff Curtis are terrific in supporting roles. Such a good movie. 6.

The Way of the Gun. Brooklyn's Finest and Harsh Times. Stylistically, Training Day feels a lot like peak Tony Scott. Gorgeous lighting, chunky closeups, intense dialogue, great character actors and lots of testosterone. Maybe try Crimson Tide if you haven't seen it yet.
