GE Washer Spins but Won't Agitate. My Sister-in-law's GE washer will not Agitate. It does Spin, Fill, and Drain but will not Agitate during the Wash Cycle. I've checked the Splines on the Agitator and all looks good. I've also checked the Magnetic door switch and that seems fine as well.
Since the washer spins, and there is no attempt to try and start or run in agitate, it's not likely the motor, or the lid switch. You may want to lower the control panel, after you remove power to the washer, and check for any damaged wiring inside the console, due to water and moisture. Good news / bad news!
My Whirlpool washer will not agitate. It performs all other functions, including drain & spin. I replaced the agitator assembly (dogs, etc) in the top of the agitator, although they worked fine.
We have a washer that came with the house when we bought it about 3 years ago. Today it stopped agitating and makes a burning smell when it should be in the agitation cycle. However, it still spins fine (at least when empty). I opened the front and the belt is fine.
As stated, my washer fills, but won't agitate. Does spin and drain. Even brand new belts just slip on pulley and burn. I have read everything here I can find on the subject. I suspect it might be the transmission, but I'd like some direction from someone with experience before I tear into it. Motor is turning belts fine in both modes.

Fills with water, and when it's full and should start the agitation all I hear is a hum from the timer in the top panel. No matter what water level, speed (it's a 2-speed) or cycle type (normal, delicate, etc), it never starts ...
Posts: 3. Little plastic spring/catch broke inside my Maytag HAV4657AWW trans. - When supposed to agitate it spun one way, when "spin" cycle - spun other way. Part not available. Found a tech sheet online from plastic supplier (showed photo of part) that said it's designed to last 10 years.

The machine will fill but won't agitate. The belt spins quickly in one direction and the tub slowly follows it, but i can stop the tub with my hand. I can get it to spin and pump out, but it bangs around due to tub lean.
