Location of Wallace in Shoshone County, Idaho. Wallace, Idaho is a city in and the county seat of Shoshone County, Idaho, [ 5 ] in the Silver Valley mining district of the Idaho Panhandle. Founded in 1884, Wallace sits alongside the South Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River (and Interstate 90). [ 4 ] The town's population was 791 at the 2020 census.
The Wallace Historic District was designated as part of a highway revolt to prevent Interstate 90 from being built and destroying the historic center of Wallace. [2] The original listing was an 8 acres (3.2 ha) area roughly bounded by Pine, Bank, 5th and 7th Sts. It included 485 contributing buildings, many built during 1890–91.
