Newry was founded in 1157 as a settlement around a Cistercian abbey. In the 16th century the English dissolved the abbey and built Bagenal's Castle on the site. Newry grew as a market town and a garrison, and became a port in 1742 when the Newry Canal was opened, the first summit-level canal in Ireland.

Sunday River Golf Club is an 18-hole, semi-private golf club located in the Town of Newry, in Oxford County, in the Western mountains of Maine. It was designed by famed golf course architect Robert Trent Jones, Jr. Designed in the early 1990s, the construction of the course began in 2003 under the leadership of Harris Golf.
The Lower Sunday River School is an historic school on Sunday River Road, just north of its junction with Skiway Road, in Newry, Maine. Built in 1895 by the town, this is one of the best-preserved one-room schoolhouses in northern Oxford County. The school was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. [1]
