The "dactyl," as a foot, is — u u; the name comes from the Greek for "finger," because it looks like the three bones of a finger, going outward from the palm. The principal colon of dactylic verse is the " hemiepes " or "half-epic" colon, — u u — u u — (sometimes abbreviated D).
