The grotto is the place where according to tradition St Paul lived and preached during his three months stay in Malta in 60 A.D. In 1748 Grand Master Pinto donated a statue of St Paul for the grotto. The grotto was visited by various Popes, Pope John Paul II in 1990 and 2001 and Pope Benedict XVI in 2010. [4]
St. Paul's Catacombs are some of the most prominent features of Malta's early Christianity archeology. The archeological clearing of the site has revealed an extensive system of underground galleries and tombs dating from the third to the eighth centuries CE. [1] The site was first fully investigated in 1894 by Dr. Antonio Annetto Caruana.
The ceiling, depicting episodes connected with St Peter and Paul, was painted by the Maltese artist Lazzaro Pisani, while the architectural decorations are the work of the Italian Pio Cellini. Principal force behind all these new projects was Archpriest Martin Camilleri. The church became a minor Basilica on 26 June 1967. [3]
The Catacombs of St. Paul are now administered by Heritage Malta. [7] Part of St. Paul's Catacombs, the part accessible from the Parish tradition and as recorded in the Bible, St. Paul stayed here for three months when he was shipwrecked on the island in AD 60. [8]
