St Lawrence Parish is located in the Huntington section of Shelton and, with over 3,000 registered families, is one of the largest parishes in the Diocese. The modern church was constructed shortly after the parish was formed in 1955. The architect was J. Gerald Phelan. A recent renovation doubled the size of the church and added a parish center.

The first Catholic church in Connecticut was established in 1829 in Hartford. In 1830, James Fitton celebrated mass in Bridgeport in the home of James McCullough on Middle Street. From 1832 to 1837, James McDermot visited Hartford from New Haven. He said mass at the Farrell residence, also on Middle Street.
St. Agnes Parish was founded in 1963 and celebrated its first mass January 24, 1964. Eventually St. Agnes acquired the estate of Alexander Dommerich, known as Wildwood Farm. The buildings on this estate were designed by Charles T. Wills. In January, 1967 a spectacular fire destroyed the 50-room main house of the estate, built in 1917.
The church was constructed by the E&F Construction Company of Bridgeport, and dedicated on September 21, 1958. The Mass was celebrated by Father Halloran, with Father John J. Bennett as Deacon and Father Daniel J. Foley as Subdeacon; the homilist was Father Joseph A. Heffernan.
The district encompasses the original colonial settlement of Shelton, which was first known as Huntington. It is a linear district about 0.75 miles (1.21 km) in length, centered on the Huntington Green and Cemetery, and extending north along Church Street and south along Huntington Street.
