Volusia County (/ v ə ˈ l uː ʃ ə /, və-LOO-shə) is a county located in the east-central part of the U.S. state of Florida between the St. Johns River and the Atlantic Ocean.As of the 2020 census, the county was home to 553,543 people, an increase of 11.9% from the 2010 census.
Ponce Inlet lies on a peninsula at (29.094744, –80.942599), [4] adjacent to the Ponce de León Inlet, and between the Halifax River and Atlantic According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 14.7 square miles (38 km 2 ), of which 4.3 square miles (11 km 2 ) is land and 10.3 square miles (27 km 2 ) (70.48%) is water.
In 2005, Pier Village, a Victorian-inspired mixed-use community consisting of rental residences atop retail space, opened, although it notably lacked a pier like previous iterations of the waterfront. A public grassy area called Festival Plaza is the site of regular events, including concerts, arts & crafts fairs, outdoor movies and holiday events.
In 1982 the light was restored to active service, primarily because highrise buildings blocked the Coast Guard's beacon on the other side of the inlet. The Ponce De Leon Inlet Light Station was designated a National Historic Landmark on August 5, 1998, [7] [8] one of only eleven lighthouses to earn this designation. [9]
