Open University (Indonesian: Universitas Terbuka, abbreviated as UT) is a public university in South Tangerang, Banten, Indonesia.The university employs a Open and Distance Learning (ODL) system to widen access to higher education to all Indonesian citizens, including those who live in remote islands throughout the country, and in various parts of the world.
In 1964, the Physical Education faculty was separated from the institute and was established as the Sports Institute (Indonesian: Sekolah Tinggi Olahraga) only to be reintegrated back into IKIP Medan system in 1977. [1] On October 7, 1999, IKIP Medan received university status.
The core of the syllabus is the 36 moral values (called "nilai" in Malay). These values include "Kepercayaan kepada Tuhan" (creed), "Bertanggungjawab" (responsibility) and "Sikap Keterbukaan" (open-mindedness) among others. In 2009, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono once more altered the university's name - this time to Universitas Islam Negeri Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, based from Wali Songo member Malik Ibrahim. This further name change was preceded by a massive expansion of university facilities, partly funded by the Islamic Development Bank. [5]
The idea for a university was first floated during the 1952 General Synod of the HKBP. After two years of preparation, the university was inaugurated on the premises of the former Pantoan Hospital in the highland town of Pematangsiantar on 7 October 1954 with three faculties; Law, Economics, and Theology; and an enrolment of 36 students.
