The parish of St. Stephen the Martyr was formed in 1848 and was originally located on Madison Avenue. A temporary church was erected and dedicated by then Bishop John Hughes on December 23, 1849. In 1853 the property was purchased by the New York and Harlem Railroad and a new church was built on 28th Street and opened March 5, 1854.

Stephen (Greek: Στέφανος, romanized: Stéphanos; c. AD 5 – c. 34) is traditionally venerated as the protomartyr or first martyr of Christianity. [2] According to the Acts of the Apostles, he was a deacon in the early church at Jerusalem who angered members of various synagogues by his teachings.

St. Stephen, Martyr's parish was founded in the spring of 1997 under the then-Bishop of Richmond, Most. Rev. Walter Francis Sullivan who served as Bishop of Richmond from July 1974 - September 2003. [2]
The Guild of St. Stephen was founded in 1904 by Father Hamilton McDonald when he formed a society of altar servers at the Convent of the Sacred Heart (now Woldingham School) in London. [1] In 1905, Pope Pius X , gave his approbation to the canonical establishment of the Guild at Westminster Cathedral .
Sunday school began at St. Stephen Martyr on January 5, 1868, but Father McNally wanted a parochial school as well, and fundraising for and construction of a $2,200 ($50,358 in 2023 dollars) structure began the following year. [2] St. Stephen's Parish School for Boys opened in 1872, with about 50 pupils aged 5 to 13 in attendance. [10]
