On December 13, 1938, the station first signed on as WJHL, jointly owned by Hanes Lancaster, Sr. and J. W. Birdwell, both from Chattanooga. [3] It was the second radio station in the Tri-Cities and the first in Johnson City. It began broadcasting at only 250 watts. During 1940, Birdwell was no longer a partner in the new station.
