The Cranberry Wilderness is located mostly in Pocahontas County (West Virginia, USA), with a small portion in Webster County.The wilderness is drained by the Williams River and the Cranberry River, both of which are tributaries of the Gauley River, which in turn unites with the New River to form the Kanawha, a tributary of the Ohio river.
This area, in the Allegheny Mountains at about 3,400 feet (1,000 m), is protected as the Cranberry Glades Botanical Area, part of the Monongahela National Forest. This site is the headwaters of the Cranberry River , a popular trout stream, and is adjacent to the nearly 50,000-acre (200 km 2 ) Cranberry Wilderness .
West Virginia contains a network of eight state forests that help to protect over 70,000 acres (28,000 ha) of wooded lands in the state. Most of the forests are managed by the West Virginia Division of Forestry, although Kanawha State Forest is managed as a state park by the Division of Natural Resources.
