Although the Turkey Creek Community predated the founding of the City of Gulfport, it was annexed by that City in 1994. [2] After Hurricane Katrina devastated the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 2005, business expansion accelerated northward, away from the coastline, and into the Turkey Creek Community, garnering national attention. William H. Hardy Monument in Gulfport, Mississippi. Although the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad changed hands to Joseph T. Jones, Hardy remained involved as a board member until 1899. His election to the Mississippi State Legislature in 1895 kept him at the State Capital in Jackson enough to make involvement with the railroad less possible.

Gulfport, Mississippi (map center) is east of Long Beach, west of Biloxi, along the Gulf of Mexico. According to the United States Census Bureau , the city had a total area of 64.2 sq mi (166.4 km 2 ), of which 56.9 sq mi (147.4 km 2 ) is land and 7.3 sq mi (19.0 km 2 ) (11.40%) is water.
Currently the Island View Casino is the only casino left in Gulfport after the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina. The new facility (Phase I) opened on September 18, 2006, with 1,033 video poker and slot machines and 15 table games , a 350-seat Island View buffet , C&G Grille, and a 563-room hotel.
Gus Stevens Seafood Restaurant & Buccaneer Lounge was a restaurant and supper club on US Highway 90 in Biloxi, Mississippi. Gus Stevens, the Greek-American owner, came to the Gulf Coast in 1946. [ 1 ]
