Howell Township is a civil township of Livingston County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 7,893 at the 2020 census , [ 3 ] up from 6,702 at the 2010 census . [ 4 ] The township is bordered on the southeast by the city of Howell , but the two are administered autonomously.
The two-year-old village of Howell was chosen as the county seat, due to its central location. However, many county residents protested the designation, and the county had to rent rooms to use as offices. [2] It was not until 1847 that the first county courthouse was constructed. This building served until 1874, when it was replaced. [3]
