Bhutan has thirteen colleges [1] and two universities that are the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB) [2] and the Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan (KGUMSB). [3] This is a list of universities and colleges in Bhutan.
It began as a Teacher Training Centre for preschool care, which was formally inaugurated on 4 November 1974 with five female trainees and the center was a demonstration school at the Rinpung campus. The college is in Samtse, Bhutan. It was founded in 1968 as the Teacher Training Institute by King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, the third king of Bhutan. It was renamed in 1983 to National Institute of Education and was changed to Samtse College of Education in 2003 when it became part of the Royal University of Bhutan. [1]

[1] Bhutan's only junior college--Sherubtse College in Kanglung, Trashigang District—was established in 1983 as a three-year degree-granting college affiliated with the University of Delhi. [1]
The medical school, founded in Thimphu in 2013, was renamed Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences (KGUMSB) in 2015 in honor of the ruling Druk Gyalpo. [3] The MoU between the Ministry of Health and the University was signed to strengthen the programmes further.
The students of the university are involved in several extracurricular activities apart from their academic curriculum: [12] Nangpai Zhenu Club serves as an interest group for young Buddhists. They participate in morning and evening prayers, rimdo and puja ceremonies, Lungta recitation, etc. Kuenphen Tshogpa Club serves as the philanthropic club.
As of 2023, the Ministry controlled 573 schools. [2] The Ministry's stated vision is "An educated and enlightened society of GNH, built and sustained on the unique Bhutanese values of tha dam-tsig ley gju-drey."
