The retailer was founded by owner Tom Morris in 1976 as a single store called Home and Bargain [2] in Old Swan, Liverpool when he was aged 21. The name was changed to Home Bargains in 1995, but is still colloquially referred to by its original name in the Merseyside area.
The TJX Companies, Inc. (abbreviated TJX) is an American multinational off-price department store corporation, headquartered in Framingham, Massachusetts. [4] It was formed as a subsidiary of Zayre Corp. in 1987, and became the legal successor to Zayre Corp. following a company reorganization in 1989.
Since late 2001, Winners stores have been paired with HomeSense, a home accessory retailer, modelled on TJX's American HomeGoods stores. Winners acquired the struggling "Labels" brand from Dylex in 2001. Labels had been meant to compete with Winners, but never succeeded; most of its stores have been turned into Homesense stores.
In 2007 and 2009, TK Maxx in the UK was the sole retailer of Red Nose Day T-shirts, sales of which generated £2 million in 2007 and £3 million in 2009 for Comic Relief. Autumn 2010 saw a mixed TK Maxx and Homesense store open on the site of the former cinema in the Lower Blue Mall. In November 2011, construction started on the new MetrOasis, on the site of a former Esso garage. In 2012, the Central Mall was redeveloped as the Platinum Mall, which focuses on higher-end stores and designer outlets.
