This was an existing Iberian ship type, used for fishing, commerce and military purposes. Unlike other vessels of the time, the caravel had a sternpost-mounted rudder (as opposed to a side-mounted steering oar). It had a shallow draft, which was helpful in exploring unknown coastlines.
Caravels were a common type of vessel in the coastal waters of the Iberian Peninsula in the fifteenth century. [ 5 ] The caravel was the preferred vessel of Portuguese explorers like Diogo Cão , Bartolomeu Dias , Gaspar , and Miguel Corte-Real , and was also used by Spanish expeditions like those of Christopher Columbus .
The ship was able to navigate through all of the obstacles and dangers up to Bajo de la Campana by sailing a couple miles off shore. When the ship reached the Easterly part of the Bajo de la Campana Shoal, it encountered bad weather and ran aground, and large boulders on the seabed tore a large hole in the ship.
