The Morgan dollar is a United States dollar coin minted from 1878 to 1904, in 1921, and beginning again in 2021 as a collectible. It was the first standard silver dollar minted since the passage of the Coinage Act of 1873, which ended the free coining of silver and the production of the previous design, the Seated Liberty dollar.
Numismatic News has estimated that there are less than 100 1893-S Morgan dollars in uncirculated condition. The two largest coin grading companies, PCGS and NGC, have graded 47 in higher grades. [7] In 2014 the Eliasberg 1893-S Morgan dollar sold for US$646,250 at auction. It is a Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) graded coin in MS-65. [1]
Coin grading [1] is the process of determining the grade or condition of a coin, one of the key factors in determining its collectible value. A coin's grade is generally determined by six criteria: strike, preservation, luster, color, attractiveness, and occasionally the country/state in which it was minted.
Like circulated grades, proof coins are graded on the Sheldon scale from 1 to 70, and are preceded by the abbreviation ‘PF’ or ‘PR’ to distinguish them from circulation strikes. Proof coins graded 60 to 70 are mirrored to those of Uncirculated grades with the difference that the coin was not made for circulation.
There are in more than 3,000 different VAMs however the coin certification company Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) does not recognize all of them. They recognize 52 VAM Peace dollars and 317 Morgan dollar VAMs [2] A VAM can be a small change in dies like a different sized mint mark, or something more dramatic like a repunched date.
The dollars and quarters bear a mint mark of an "S", but the cents are otherwise indistinguishable from those minted at Philadelphia (which bear no mint marks, unlike those years' proof cents from San Francisco and circulation cents from Denver). From 1973 through 1981 the dollar was also included, and also from 2000 on.
