The airport is located 31 kilometres (19 miles) northwest of downtown Dammam and is named after the former King of Saudi Arabia, Fahd ibn Abdulaziz (1921–2005). The airport serves the entire Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia and is one of the four primary international airports in the kingdom.
It was renamed Prince Naif bin Abdulaziz International Airport by royal decree by King Abdullah on 5 July 2012 in memory of former Crown Prince Naif who died in June 2012. [ 4 ] [ 3 ] Prince Sultan , then crown prince and minister of defense and aviation, launched an expansion project of the royal terminal at the airport in 2003.
The contract for the airport expansion project was signed with a national company in June 2006 at a cost of SR188 million. [1] The airport features air bridges that link passengers directly with aircraft, a first for regional airports in Saudi Arabia. [2] The airport only has 2 air-bridges, Gates 1 and 2.
The airport resides at an elevation of 20 feet (6 m) above mean sea level.It has one runway designated 15/33 with an asphalt surface measuring 3,050 by 45 metres (10,007 ft × 148 ft). [1]

New Madinah airport test operations began on 12 April 2015. A Saudia domestic flight coming from Riyadh landed at 11 a.m. at the new Prince Muhammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah, marking the start of the airport's test run operations. Flight SV1435 was the first to land at the airport.
