Old Colombo Lighthouse or Colombo Fort Clock Tower is a clock tower and was a lighthouse in Colombo. The lighthouse is no longer operational, but the tower remains and functions as a clock tower . It is located at the junction of Chatham Street and Janadhipathi Mawatha (formerly Queens Road) in Colombo fort .
It was built in 1881 in memory of Dr. E. L. Koch (1838–1877), the second principal of the Colombo Medical School. It stands directly in front of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka. Edwin Lawson Koch was born on 29 November 1838 in Jaffna, the son of John Godfried Koch, a local proctor and Angenita Dordthea Aldons.
The Clock Tower was built in the early 20th century by the family of Framjee Bhikhajee Khan. This Parsi family hailed from Bombay, India and also owned the famous Colombo Oil Mills as well as other business interests in Ceylon, as Sri Lanka was then called. The clock tower also provided a working water fountain, but this no longer functions.

The Clock Tower was designed by Shirley de Alwis, one of Sri Lanka's leading architects at the time. [ 2 ] [ 5 ] De Alwis was the local resident architect [ 6 ] working with Sir Patrick Abercrombie on the design of the University of Peradeniya campus.
The clock was donated by Governor James Longden. [9] [10] The clock bell is dated 1882. [10] The tower was badly damaged in the late 1980s by the civil war. [4] When Charles, Prince of Wales visited Sri Lanka in 1998 he offered British assistance in restoring the tower. [4] The British government donated Rs. 1 million. [4]
