BattleBots: Beyond the BattleBox is an action game. Players control a radio-controlled robot and battle it out with other robots to win. The main game mode is Tournament mode, where the player competes in four matches depending on the weight class and must win all four to win an award. The player can also win sponsorships, to earn more money.
The BattleBox is a 48 ft × 48 ft (15 m × 15 m) square arena designed to protect the drivers, officials, and audience from flying debris and charging bots. It was originally designed by Pete Lampertson. As of the 2015 season, Pete was still overseeing the box with the help of Matt Neubauer.
Returning for the 12 season as hosts and analysts are MLB/NFL Sportscaster Chris Rose and former UFC fighter Kenny Florian, as well as BattleBox announcer Faruq Tauheed. The "Upper Deck" is now a main staple in the ever-evolving BattleBox, along with kill saws and rotating screws as returning arena hazards.
Caesars Entertainment Studios, at 4165 Koval Lane, was the new venue for the battlebox and the pits. Previously, competitions had taken place in the former Boeing Post 52 building at the Long Beach Airport.
This season marked the 21st year of the BattleBots competition. The lineup features 62 of the best heavyweight robots to fight head-to-head in the Battle Arena. Their goal is to earn a top 32 ranking and qualify for the post-season where there will be knockout rounds until a winner-take-all fight to crown the 2020 BattleBots World Champion.
The largest field in the history of the show will feature 68 of the best heavyweight robots (weighing a maximum of 250 pounds) to fight head-to-head in the Battle Arena.
