From 1958-1968 many vehicle manufacturers continued to use the next GM automatic transmission fluid specification, the Type "A" Suffix "A" fluid, in their transmissions. In 1966, Chrysler began releasing their own automatic transmission fluid specifications; see Mopar ATF for more information. GM ATF was the same color as engine oil through 1967.
The 8HP 70 transmission with the gearset 4 in 23-85-teeth-configuration was the pilot series and therefore without generation designation. It was first used in the BMW 7 Series (F01) 760Li, has a torque handling limit of 700 N⋅m (516 lb⋅ft), and weighs 87 kg (192 lb).
Commercially produced adapters are available to mate this transmission with many different engines and transfer cases. It is typically assumed here that mechanical transmission allows the powerplant to operate at peak output power. This assumption allows engine tuning to trade power band width and engine mass for transmission complexity and mass. Electric motors do not suffer from this tradeoff, instead trading their high torque for traction at low speed.
