IASF announced in May 2018 that they would be applying a "full top uniform" rule from the 2021 Cheerleading Worlds event onwards for teams in the international IASF-governed divisions, however, this was pushed to 2022 as a result of the pandemic. This meant that the 2022 Cheerleading Worlds was the first event to enforce this rule.

More than 4,000 competitors entered the cheerleading event in 2014. Each team (of 15–30 cheerleaders) prepares to perform a two and one-half minute routine. After the teams' routines are complete, they are scored by a panel of judges, each judge being an expert on one area of cheerleading (jumps, tumbling, stunting, etc.).
The International Cheer Union (ICU) [1] is the worldwide sports governing body of cheerleading (also known as "Cheer") and was founded in 2004. It is recognized by SportAccord [2] / Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF), [3] and is a member of the Association of IOC Recognised International Sports Federations (ARISF).
