The facility is named for the sixth president of the university, Stephen C. O'Connell , who served from 1967 to 1973.
The new facility is located on the Southwest part of campus, adjacent to Pressly Softball Stadium and Dizney Stadium, utilizing 13.63 acres (5.52 ha) of land previously occupied by the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agriculture Sciences (UF/IFAS).
