Attendance Allowance is a non-contributory Social Security benefit paid to elderly disabled people in the United Kingdom. [1] It was introduced in the National Insurance (Old Persons' and Widows' Pension and Attendance Allowance) Act 1970 . [ 2 ]
In 1971 the Attendance Allowance was brought in for those needing constant care at home. In 1976 Invalid Care Allowance was introduced – the first benefit for carers and still the only benefit specifically for carers. It was renamed Carer's Allowance in April 2003.
Constant Attendance Allowance is paid to people who receive Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit and who are classed as 100% disabled. [ 3 ] Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit is paid to people who have become disabled as a result of an illness or injury caused by work or while completing vocational training. [ 4 ]
