Rolle married three times. His first wife was Mary Stradling (died 1613), a daughter and co-heiress of Sir Edward Stradling of St George's, Somerset [2] (a member of the Stradling family of St Donat's Castle, Glamorgan, Wales). Her monumental brass survives in the parish church of St Stephens by Saltash, Cornwall. [7]
The legend of the Twelve Knights of Glamorgan was founded by the antiquarian Sir Edward Stradling (d. 1609) of St Donat's Castle in Glamorgan. Edward Stradling was the eldest son of Sir John Stradling, 1st Baronet, and Elizabeth Gage.He was born in St Donats, Glamorgan, and according to his biography in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, was baptised at St Donat's Church on 9 November 1600, [1] though in the Dictionary of Welsh Biography, he is listed as being born in 1601. [2]

Stradling was member of parliament for St. Germans, Cornwall, (1623–1624), Old Sarum (1625), and Glamorgan (1625–1626). To carry out the wishes of Sir Edward, Stradling built, equipped, and endowed Cowbridge Grammar School, though the endowment seems to have subsequently lapsed until the school was refounded by Sir Leoline Jenkins.
