A file in thumbnail mode uses the codes thumb or thumbnail. This will display a thumbnail with a caption. The default size is 220 pixels wide unless the full size file is smaller. Registered users can specify their own default size if they wish. In normal circumstances, images are scaled down automatically by Wikipedia's server.

Most images in Wikipedia articles are scaled down thumbnails. A reader of an article can click on the thumbnail, or on the small double-rectangle icon (if present) next to the caption, to see the corresponding file page and the image at a larger size. From the file description page, click the image again to see it at maximum size.
Scale a thumbnail's size to scaling factor times the default thumbnail size, rounding the result to the nearest multiple of 10. For instance, upright=1.5 makes the image larger, which is useful for maps or schematics that need to be larger to be readable.

The available values for thumbnail size in Preferences (on the Appearance tab) are 120px, 150px, 180px, 200px, 220px (default), 250px, 300px, and 400px. As explained at Wikipedia:Extended image syntax § Size, upright=Factor will "adjust a thumbnail's size to Factor times the default thumbnail size, rounding the result to the nearest multiple of 10".
A Wikipedia reader can click on the thumbnail, or on the small double-rectangle icon below it, to see the corresponding file page which will let the user see the image in its original size. Although the above text may appear in multiple lines for formatting purposes, the actual image text is on one line, as it uses spaces without any line breaks.
