Kanawha County Schools faced a multimillion-dollar budget crisis for the FY 2012, but had overcome the issue in time. Superintendent Duerring stated that school officials' two major goals, if the shortfall was to occur, is to maintain the current curriculum as much as possible, and not decrease employee wages or benefits.
Charleston has numerous schools that are part of Kanawha County Schools. The three high schools are: Capital High School, a public school in the community of Meadowbrook. It was established by the consolidation of Charleston High School and Stonewall Jackson High School. It opened in 1989.
The band has also won the Gazette-Mail Kanawha County Majorette and Band Festival Grand Championship numerous times (1986, 1991–92, 1994, 1996, 1998–2000, 2017-2022), and has had six girls named Miss Kanawha Majorette (in 1989, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2021,2023).
The school opened in 1999 as a result of the consolidation of DuPont High School (AAA) and East Bank High School (AA). Students from both of those former high schools, and from the Cedar Grove and Montgomery areas, attend the school. The school's attendance district runs from the Kanawha-Fayette county line to the Charleston city limits.
4] St Albans High School is one of eight schools in its Kanawha County district. The High School offers some AP classes and according to US news, the High School has an 80% graduation rate for the 2014-2015 school year. Total enrollment in the 2014-2015 school year was 1033 and 59 teachers taught at the school.
The current building was built in 1959, and used as a junior high school. The facility was expanded in 1966, and again in 1992 to its current iteration. Formerly, the high school was located in the heart of the business district on 21st Street. [2] That building is now occupied by the Nitro Community Center and owned by Kings Way Christian Church.
