Seapoint station as viewed from the Martello Tower when it first opened. The station opened on 1 July 1862 and was originally called Monkstown & Seapoint, though the following year this was changed to just Seapoint. [1] It was upgraded and electrified in 1984 with the arrival of DART services.

The station was subsequently designated USCG Station No. 31. [1] An auxiliary boat and apparatus house was built in 1919, at the bottom of the hill close to the beach. The 1874 T-Type station still exists as a private home in its original location. Some changes have been made to the building but most of the structural details are still in evidence.
This station has two high-level side platforms, each four cars long. There is a spur east of the station for track maintenance equipment, but was used as a freight siding until the 1970s. The siding at one point crossed Sea Cliff Avenue to service Sea Cliff Coal and Lumber, whose covered coal dump still stands.
