Hold down the shift key while pressing the enter key to open the results in a new tab. Holding down the shift key also works with Wikipedia's sidebar search or Special:Search. It does not work with the search bar.
The link Special:Search, which can be inserted onto user pages or project pages, for example, also leads to the search page. While the entire contents of the search page is included in the search results page, it is a distinct page. User scripts might be designed to work on the search results page but not the search page, for example.

You can frequently find many articles related to a topic by using advanced search to find the category that contains topic-related articles.
