Dewa 19 (pronounced in Indonesian as Dewa Sembilan Belas) is an Indonesian rock band from Surabaya, East Java, led by singer-songwriter Ahmad Dhani. Along with God Bless and Slank , they are dubbed as one of the greatest rock bands in the history of Indonesian popular music.
With Dewa 19, he released the album Kangen, which was chosen as the best album of the year by BASF in 1993. [3] Beginning after Dewa 19's third album, [3] Lasso used drugs heavily; [2] his drug addiction led to his personal decision to resign from the band in 2001. [4]
The lack of modern recording studios in Surabaya prompted Dhani to move to Jakarta in 1989 in search of a record deal for Dewa 19. After being rejected by several labels, Dewa 19 was signed to Team Records by Jan Djuhana. Their first album, Dewa 19 (1992), was a huge success with several hits such as Kangen and Kita Tidak Sedang Bercinta Lagi.
Republik Cinta is the 8th studio album by Dewa 19 and was released in January 2006 in Indonesia; the title translates into "Republic of Love". The album reached #1 on the Indonesian album charts and has since been released in other Asian territories including Malaysia and a Chinese release via EMI in Hong Kong.
The band remains inactive since 1999, where Dhani and Andra found even bigger success in Dewa 19's new formation (notably with Once as their new vocalist, and Tyo Nugros recruited into Dewa 19) through the album releases of "Bintang Lima" in 2000, "Cintailah Cinta" in 2002, "Laskar Cinta" in 2004, and "Republik Cinta" in 2006.
In 2009 Rolling Stone Indonesia selected four of these ("Lilin-Lilin Kecil" at number 13, "Merpati Putih" at number 43, "Anak Jalanan" at number 72, and "Merepih Alam" at number 90) as among the best Indonesian songs of all time. [2]
Registration opened 21 August. The main audition process was held in five major cities in Indonesia: Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Medan and Jakarta. In April 2021, Pamungkas' song "To the Bone" from Flying Solo became the longest-running top song on Spotify's Indonesia Top 50 chart. [7] The video for the song has received over 240 million views on YouTube by July 2022. [8] He recorded two covers of songs by Dewa 19 in 2021: "Pupus" and "Risalah Hati". [9]
