"Moose Milk" is my go-to real Black Powder cleaner. 25% Ballistol 75% water. After shooting my cap & ball pistols, I remove the grips and trigger guard and soak them in hot water and Dawn. A good scrub down, wipe dry then a final wipe with Moose Milk. After the water evaporates, a nice thin, protective film of Ballistol remains.
"This idea of not mixing petroleum products and black powder is the biggest -piece of crock- BS I’ve heard in years. I haven’t said any thing before, but when I’m seeing nice guns rusting and pitting from the lack of a little oil it’s time to say something.
Winchester Sutler's "Moose Milk"; or that white, opaque liquid that T/C sells (got several bottles on closeout) and was looking for something at least as effective as these, but couldn't recall or find via Google the exact recipe that Mike V. uses.
I've never used Moose Milk, but I do remember reading about it in my dad's black powder literature back in the 1960's. More recently, I've been using T/C #13 solvent with good results in my muzzle loaders. It looks like milk, and I figured it must be similar. Dixie Gun Works sells readymade Moose Milk (Item # LA0102), and the catalog says it ...
On Sunday, I was going to take my Coyote Bait (Dachshund pup) out and see if I could find a tree rat for her, since squirrel season hasn't officially opened yet, I loaded the 32cal with a moose milk patch made of Ballistol and Distilled water, because I really wasn't planning on shooting it and figured I could leave it loaded a few days if need be.
Actually moose milk looks like milk.... usually a combo of water soluble oil and water. The % of each varies as to taste. I use 10% Ballistol, 90% water. The peroxide-alcohol-Murphy's equal part of each you're referring to is kind of a standard BP "cleaning" solution.... one of a pazzillion. It is a fairly clear solution.
Some hydrocarbon based material is definitely a no-no with BP. I know I use the 4 parts mutton tallow, 4 parts paraffin (the Gulf brand), 2 parts bees wax recipe in .45 Colt pistols, .44wcf rifles, and .36 and .44 capgun wads. Never had a gun foul to the point of shooting patterns. Cleans right up with moose milk. Yer mileage may vary.
I shoot B.P.C.R.'s and swab the barrel between shots. I have been using what people call "Moose Milk" and was told the best mix was 20 : 1 Ballistol and water. I have been hearing all kinds of mixes with Ballistol, machine oil, Murphy's soap. Dawn etc., I have tried straight water but the patch's are sometimes tough going down barrel.
You can search the forum to find the exact recipe for moose milk, but the stuff I made is from water, water-soluble cutting oil, and murphy's wood-oil soap, I believe. 01-28-2016, 04:06 PM #5 ShooterAZ
