The projector used 16" glass disks onto which Muybridge had an unidentified artist paint the sequences as silhouettes. This technique eliminated the backgrounds and enabled the creation of fanciful combinations and additional imaginary elements. Muybridge wrote that the exposure time he used for horses at full speed was between one six-hundredth and one eight-hundredth of a second each. The interval of time between successive exposures was 31 thousands of a second. As one sequence of 15 pictures takes about 1.5 seconds, the animation shows about 1/3 of normal speed. In an attempt to create more realistic images, photographers and artists would hand-colour monochrome photographs. The first hand-coloured daguerreotypes are attributed to Swiss painter and printmaker Johann Baptist Isenring, who used a mixture of gum arabic and pigments to colour daguerreotypes soon after their invention in 1839.
