UW teams were first introduced as the Huskies on February 3, 1922, during the halftime intermission of a basketball game vs. Washington State. [54] The newly christened Huskies beat the Cougars, who adopted their nickname in 1919, by a score of 40–10. The "Husky" nickname was the selection of the committee formed to replace "Sun Dodger".
