From circa 1997 to 2012 the enrollment declined by 55%, the sharpest decrease of any senior high school in the Philadelphia archdiocese, and in 2012 the campus was 40% occupied. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia used the lower enrollment and a budget shortfall of $624,480 from 2006 to 2012 as reasons to have the campus closed. [ 4 ]

Stuyvesant High School was established in 1904 initially as an all-boys school in the East Village of lower Manhattan. Starting in 1934, admission for all applicants was contingent on passing an entrance examination. In 1969, after 65 years with an all-male student body, the high school started permanently accepting female students.
Open Volunteering Club who hosts the Annual International Festival. It is the largest club in the school. National Honor Society (NHS) Application Based Club for High Achieving Students. Robotics Open Club competing in both VEX and FIRST Robotics competitions. Students have regularly reached the world championships for the Vex Competition.
The school is named after Edward John O'Dea who was bishop of Seattle when the school was built. O'Dea is a part of the Archdiocese of Seattle . Of its 480 students in four grades in 2022, 56% were Catholics, 53% were Caucasian, 16% were African American, and 19% were multi-racial.
