The seat of the island's government (cabildo insular) is located in Puerto del Rosario. A total of 118,574 people lived on the island in 2018. By the 1940s the island had an airport (just west of Puerto del Rosario on the road to Tindaya, still visible today).
However, in 1957, it was decided that the name "Cabras" was not suitable. A more attractive name was selected and Puerto de Cabras was renamed Puerto del Rosario ("rosary port"). During the 1960s there was rural and urban migration from the smaller villages and farm areas of the island into Puerto del Rosario. The population grew in these years.
It is situated in El Matorral, 5 km (3 mi) southwest [2] [3] of the capital city Puerto del Rosario. The airport has flight connections to over 80 destinations worldwide, and over 5.6 million passengers passed through it in 2019. [1] The airport has one terminal building with two floors.

The lighthouse first entered service in 1992, as part of the third maritime lighting plan for the Canaries. Other lighthouses that were built as part of the same plan include Punta Lava and Arenas Blancas on La Palma, Morro Jable on Fuerteventura, and Punta del Castillete lighthouse also on Gran Canaria.
