The regions of England, formerly known as the government office regions, are the highest tier of sub-national division in England. They were established in 1994 [1] and follow the 1974–96 county borders. They are a continuation of the former 1940s standard regions which followed the 1889–1974 administrative county borders.

The ITL 1 statistical regions correspond with the regions of England as used by the UK's Office for National Statistics. The present government office regions closely resemble Civil Defence Regions. During the latter part of the Cold War, the United Kingdom was divided into 11 such regions, most of which were divided themselves into sub-regions.
