Because Cyprus no longer has a working railway system, various other methods of transport are needed to ensure the proper delivery of any cargo, be it human or freight.
The road was widened in preparation, but following the Turkish Invasion of Cyprus in July 1974 and the closure of the airport as a result, this scheme was abandoned. Construction started on the A1 to connect Nicosia with the new main port of Cyprus at Limassol in 1978. The construction started at both ends concurrently.

The A4 in Cyprus is a road which links the centre of Larnaca with the original terminal of Larnaca International Airport. Although it has an A designation, it is not a motorway, and contains all at grade separation junctions and a number of traffic lights. It follows the route of Artmedios Avenue.
