The principal quantum number was first created for use in the semiclassical Bohr model of the atom, distinguishing between different energy levels. With the development of modern quantum mechanics, the simple Bohr model was replaced with a more complex theory of atomic orbitals .
Four quantum numbers can describe an electron energy level in a hydrogen-like atom completely: Principal quantum number (n) Azimuthal quantum number (ℓ) Magnetic quantum number (m ℓ) Spin quantum number (m s) These quantum numbers are also used in the classical description of nuclear particle states (e.g. protons and neutrons).
The orbits in which the electron may travel are shown as grey circles; their radius increases as n 2, where n is the principal quantum number. The 3 → 2 transition depicted here produces the first line of the Balmer series, and for hydrogen (Z = 1) it results in a photon of wavelength 656 nm (red light).

Colors show the quantum phase of the highly excited electron. Figure 2: Energy levels in atomic lithium showing the Rydberg series of the lowest 3 values of orbital angular momentum converging on the first ionization energy. A Rydberg atom is an excited atom with one or more electrons that have a very high principal quantum number, n.
The principal quantum number (n) is shown at the right of each row. In quantum mechanics, the azimuthal quantum number ℓ is a quantum number for an atomic orbital that determines its orbital angular momentum and describes aspects of the angular shape of the orbital.
The spin magnetic quantum number m s specifies the z-axis component of the spin angular momentum for a particle having spin quantum number s. For an electron, s is 1 ⁄ 2 , and m s is either + 1 ⁄ 2 or − 1 ⁄ 2 , often called "spin-up" and "spin-down", or α and β.
9/2: [7] Terms are assigned for each group (with different principal quantum number n) and rightmost level 6 F o 9/2 is from coupling of terms of these groups so 6 F o 9/2 represents final total spin quantum number S, total orbital angular momentum quantum number L and total angular momentum quantum number J in this atomic energy
