"Tom Sawyer" is a song by Canadian rock band Rush, originally released on their 1981 album Moving Pictures as its opener. The band's lead singer, bassist, and keyboardist, Geddy Lee, has referred to the track as the band's "defining piece ... from the early '80s".
It remains Rush's highest-selling album in the United States, with five million copies sold. "Limelight", "Tom Sawyer" and "Vital Signs" were released as singles across 1981, and the instrumental "YYZ" was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. Rush supported the album on tour from February to July 1981.
After the tour, Rush joined fellow Toronto-based rock band Max Webster to record "Battle Scar" for their 1980 album, Universal Juveniles. Rush's first live album, All the World's a Stage, is also represented by the cover's background image, taken at a concert at the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium in Buffalo, New York. The latter two films also feature the song "Tom Sawyer". Both a cover and the original version of the song are available as downloadable tracks for the music video game series Rock Band, the latter being bundled with the rest of the Moving Pictures album. It is also playable in Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock and Guitar Hero Live.
