The College of Engineering at the University of Utah originated from the State School of Mines, established in the 1890s. Dedicated to enhancing Utah's mining industry, it was among the first engineering programs west of the Mississippi River. The first modern four-year engineering degree at the school was introduced in 1895.

In addition to its campus in Cedar City, Southwest Tech also operates a campus in Kanab, Utah. Southwest Tech focuses on certificate programs in Automotive, Business, Computer Science, Culinary Arts, Digital Media, Health Professions, Industrial Maintenance and Automation, Professional Truck Driving and Welding.
The school became Weber State College in 1962, and in 1964 became a four-year college. It was a charter member of the Big Sky Conference in 1963. [ 13 ] [ 14 ] The first graduate program (accounting), was added in 1984, [ 15 ] and it gained university status on January 1, 1991.
Previously called Utah Valley State College, the school attained university status in July 2008. With an enrollment of over 44,000 students as of fall 2023, UVU is the largest university by enrollment in Utah and one of the largest in the Rocky Mountain region of the United States.
The program is currently being reviewed by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities for final approval. If the program is approved, the first cohort will start in fall 2023 and graduate in spring 2026. Science, Engineering, and Technology building, on Utah Tech University's campus.
