In June 1956, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) granted a construction permit to WIRL-TV on Peoria's channel 8, but it stayed the grant pending a proceeding on whether channel 8 would remain in Peoria. [5] On February 26, 1957, the FCC moved channel 8 to the Quad Cities and made Peoria all-UHF as part of its deintermixture program. [6]
